Art Work is a newspaper  that consists of writings and images from artists, activists, writers, critics, and others on the topic of working within depressed economies and how that impacts artistic process, compensation and artistic property. Temporary Services made this newspaper in 2009 as a direct response to the financial collapse of 2008 and the devastating impact it had on the arts, artists, art museums, exhibitions spaces, curators and others working within the field of fine, community, or contemporary art. Temporary Services wanted to address the crisis in a national conversation. Over 18,000 copies of the paper were distributed in 90+ cities in the U.S. and Puerto Rico. The paper was made to be taken apart and turned into an exhibition and used as a backdrop for conversations. Between 20 and 30 exhibitions and discussions took place across the U.S. and in Puerto Rico. The newspaper pulls together reports from various cities about working conditions there, anonymous reports about the impact of the collapse, a history of American artists working with art and economy, critical essays and histories of arts funding, artist unity, culture wars, and so on.
