Taking its name from the, now defunct trolley line, that took Los Angelenos around their city in the early 20th century, 'Balloon Route' offers textual and visual accounts of utopia, a word which literally means no place. We travel from the three living Shakers to record commentary tracks onto existing documentaries; and then to India’s Auroville, an experiment in human creativity and spirituality; from a fictional account of a communal home in Berlin to the open-source Yoists of Boston; from Tamil coconut farms to capitalist grandparents in Mumbai; from a dance contest in a community center in a slum, to the Flat World headquarters; from Watsu therapy to Sauna culture; from the womb to the egg; from literal myths to fabricated stories of genius; from suburban Los Angeles to Los Angeles. This is a collection of temporal places that accidentally or intentionally experiment with the complex contradictions of idealism in this futuristic anti-utopian utopian moment.
