We had the good fortune to hang out with Amy Franceschini during a recent trip to San Francisco and when she brought out this book, it was a must that we acquire copies for Half Letter Press. It's filled with tons of great contributors including Nance Klehm, Sasha Moniker, Michael Swaine, Rosemary Stasek, Molly Mirbane, John Cage, Fogelstad Skolan, Sean Dockray,David Elliott, Sarah Lewison, Mark Rodriguez, Nils Norman, and more! Each copy comes wrapped with translucent paper and string. Here's how Free Soil describe the book:

"The Free Soil Reader binds together a group of artists who share a common interest in non-institutionalized, free, and radical learning environments. These interviews, printed ephemera, and storytelling have been chosen based on the importance of their contributions to the history of alternative education, and their continued relevance in a look towards various forms of education as cultural production and creative resistance. As each contributor in the reader is also an educator in both the university and art school contexts, we are constantly reevaluating the way we learn and how learning and teaching can be a radical and transformitive practice. The continuum of projects presented in this reader take us out of “class” rooms and into the diversity of the whole wide world. This collection is just scratching the surface of what is out there, but we hope that you are left with that pressing feeling of dirt under your nails from hours of digging to the center of the earth.

The core editors of this reader are Amy Franceschini, Veronica Wiman and Adam Wight. The contents of this reader were first presented in conjunction with the 2008 Free Soil Bus Tour, a roaming, thematic classroom in conjunction with the 2nd Biennial 01SJ Global Festival of Art in San Jose, California: A journey through the history and currents of free education, counter-institutional movements and the economy of information in Silicon Valley + beyond."
