A fresh new collaboration between Public Collectors and Eric Schierloh of Barba de Abejas! This 2023 text from Eric drops lots of new wisdom on the old problem of how to start a publishing house. It's jammed with excellent and suggestive ideas and insights. From the back cover:
ISBN? No Thanks and Other Notes Before Starting a Publishing Housewas originally published by Barba de Abejas in July 2023. The translation is by the author Eric Schierloh. The ¿ISBN? No Gracias graphic on the cover is by the Mexican graphic artist Rafael Rodríguez Pachiclón (@pachiclon). It is based on the The Smiling Sun logo designed in 1975 by the Danish activist and designer Anne Lund, in dialogue with fellow activists, within the Organisation for Information on Nuclear Power. Thanks to Ricos Jugos from Guadalajara, México for allowing us to use this redesign. This publication has a PEER PRODUCTION LICENSE that allows sharing, adaptation, and commercial use as long as authorship is attributed, the same license is maintained, and the commerce is conducted directly by independent workers who manufacture the publications.
Eric Schierloh was born in La Plata (Buenos Aires, Argentina) in 1981. He runs the artisan publishing project Barba de Abejas. This booklet is the second English translation of Eric Schierloh’s writing that Public Collectors has published. The first was How to Prepare Yourself for the Collapse of the Industrial Publishing System in 2022.

In 2020 Eric wrote this essay that he translated into English with an American friend, Paul Paul Holzman, who also lives in Buenos Aires. In December 2021, Eric reached out to me to share his enthusiasm for my text “Towards a Self Sustaining Publishing Model.” Eric proposed making a Spanish translation and publishing my writing as a cheap edition in Argentina. He felt my text had similarities to his own words; the two works share a similar spirit of encouraging publishing experimentation outside of typically limiting market constraints.
Though Eric’s text had already been published in English in World Literature Today magazine and translated into French by the cardboard press La Liebre Dorada, we agreed that it could still be worthwhile to make a US edition that stood alone. So, in a celebration of artist publishing exchanges, Public Collectors is happy to share Eric Schierloh’s inspiring writing. It provides many potential creative paths forward for people with access to any form of printing, and any materials that could be used to make a book.
