These postcards were created in response to Republican attacks and threats against public libraries (as well as other libraries that are under attack, at high schools, colleges, and universities). They are designed to be mailed, posted and displayed, or handed out at protests and events. The text on the reverse was generated collaboratively by soliciting feedback and suggestions from at least 20 librarians on the Bluesky platform. It reads:
Libraries:
Are free. We pay for them through our taxes.
Support authors and publishers.
Give young people safe creative spaces.
Provide critical internet access.
Carry banned books and crucial reference materials.
Host countless free lectures and programs.
Provide social services, from job counseling and
tax help, to legal information and Narcan.
Let you use the bathroom without buying anything.
Have movies, music, seeds, ebooks, periodicals, and more.
Give patrons resources for self-learning.
Support Libraries:
Get a library card and use it.
Attend library board meetings.
Run for the library board.
Sign up to use library community rooms.
Attend library programs and events.
Demand more state and federal funding for libraries.
Visit ala.org/advocacy and voice opposition to cuts.
Tell others about the benefits of libraries.
Tell librarians how important they are to you.
These are being sold in sets of 10 blank postcards. These are priced to offset the cost of printing and the distribution of free postcards at various sites. Support libraries and librarians!
